  Our Adoption Policy

Please take a moment to read the following explanation of our adoption policies and process. You may be surprised to learn that adopting an animal is more complicated than you expected, or that you can't have immediate access to an animal in which you are interested. It is important to understand two things:

  • The adoption process is the same for everyone.
  • Our intent is not to frustrate you. Rather, we strive to work in the best interests of the animals in our care at all times and give them best possible chance of finding the right FOREVER home.

Once you know adopting a Pit is what you want to do:

Check out our available dogs and fill out our adoption application. After we receive your application, someone in our organization will contact you to tell you more about the dog in which you are interested.

Adoption Requirements:

We have a strict adoption policy to prevent our dogs from falling into the wrong hands, mainly because Pit Bulls are often stolen or used for illegal purposes. We are not trying to make this difficult for you, but we do take our responsibility seriously to ensure that each dog is placed in the best home possible.

All applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • All applicants must be 21 years or older
  • Proof of ID is required
  • Applicants who rent will have their landlord called
  • Applicants who own a home must provide proof of ownership
  • Applicants can not have a history of criminal conviction
  • All members of the household must agree to getting a new dog
  • Applicants County laws must be upheld (i.e., a county may have a 2 dog limit per household)

Will you be a responsible Pit Bull owner?

IMPORTANT HOME OWNER INSURANCE INFORMATION:

If you own your own home, please make sure your insurance company will allow you to have a Pit Bull!

Many dogs end up in shelters after their owners learn they could lose their homeowners insurance because they own a Pit Bull. If you have your heart set on adopting a Pit Bull, make an anonymous call to your insurance company and ask about their "restricted breed" policy. In some cases, you may need to change insurance companies before adding a Pit Bull to your family.

If you rent from a private homeowner, please talk to them first to ensure that their homeowners insurance will allow a Pit Bull to live on the property.

It is very easy for a renting situation to go bad. For example, a renter owns a Pit Bull that attacks a neighbors dog, then the landlord/homeowner loses his/her insurance (which can blackball someone from being eligible for other homeowners insurance), and the renter gets evicted. The Pit Bull gets taken to the pound and is euthanized because the renter can not find an apartment at the last minute that will allow Pit Bulls.

We do not want this to happen to our dogs, which is why we must check with your landlord or verify proof of homeownership. For more information on homeowners insurance, click here.

As a Pit Bull owner, you have to be more responsible than the average dog owner.  You must keep your dog out of potentially harmful situations. You must keep you dog from making the breed look bad. Finally, you must always be an ambassador to the breed by keeping  the advancement of the breed as a pet in the forefront of your mind.
